Crime at a Glance: The Halfway Mark

We've no advanced past the midpoint of the year in COMPSTAT reporting, so it's time to take a look at the year as a whole so far.

Let's dig into the most recent crime numbers below:

  • Only one major crime area has seen an increase this year — burglaries. After a rash of crimes in early spring, Forest Hills and Rego Park are looking at a more than 37 percent increase in the category year over year.
  • So far this summer, things have gone better on that front, but the numbers will have to improve dramatically in the second half of 2013 to beat the previous year.
  • Grand larcenies, which have always been a problem crime in the 112 Precinct, are down slightly compared to 2012. There have been 214 this year compared to 222 the year before. Those are numbers that tend to tick up during the holiday season, however.
  • So far, felony assaults have been the area of greatest improvement over last year, with the total number dropping by more than one third compared to 2012.
  • Among minor crimes, there has been an increase in petit larceny and misdemeanor sex crimes, and a decrease of nearly 24 percent among misdemeanor assault.
