Crime at a Glance: Nearing the Year's End

What's happening in local crime?

The holidays are, as the 112 Precinct frequently reminds locals, a time to be vigilant as well as festive. Families shopping for gifts for loved ones, hosting parties and leaving for family vacations can lead to a perfect storm for those who would break the law.

So let's dig into the crime numbers as we move headlong into the holiday season this year.

  • The most recent week was very good for recorded crime overall, with a big downward trend driven by a lack of robberies.
  • Only one robbery was reported between Nov. 19 and Nov. 25, down from five in that same period the previous year.
  • Grand larcenies, the crime that the 112 Precinct takes great pains to focus on, also went down, with just nine committed compared to 11 last year.
  • There was only one increase in major crimes — there was one more auto theft reported in the area, making the total three for the week, compared to just two last year.
  • Burglaries and felonious assault remained static.
  • Minor crimes, however, including petit larceny and misdemeanor assault, were way up during the week, with six minor assaults recorded, compared to just one last year.
