Crime at a Glance: Grand Larceny Auto

They don't really call it "grand theft" anymore.

It's time to take a look at the most recent crime statistics in your local courtesy of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

Here are just a few facts you need to know about crime in Forest Hills and Rego Park lately:

  • Between June 4 and June 10, there was a big spike in stolen cars reported, with a total of eight in the precinct. That is a big increase over the two reported stolen during the same week last year.
  • Overall, the number of stolen cars compared to 2011 is only slightly higher, with 36 reported in 2012 compared to 34 in 2011. In the last month, there have been nine total cars reported stolen.
  • After a big jump in recent weeks, the precinct seems to have stemmed the tide of grand larceny incidents — like purse-snatchings and stolen wallets. There were only seven in the most recent week, compared to 15 during the same period last year.
  • For the month, there has also been a big decline in robberies compared to 2011. So far, in the last 28 days, there have been five reported robberies, a significant drop from the 17 reported during the same period last year.
