Burglaries, Grand Larcenies Skyrocket in Forest Hills

Latest crime numbers show a nearly 90 percent increase in burglaries over last year.

The latest crime numbers in Forest Hills and Rego Park indicate a startling increase in crime in the community — specifically burglaries and auto thefts.

The most recent COMPSTAT numbers, attached above, show an 89 percent increase in burglaries compared to 2012, with more than 50 instances this year.

Through mid-April in 2012, there were only 28 such crimes.

The most startling number may be the last four weeks police have recorded. There have been 21 burglaries over a 28-day period covering parts of March and April. During the same period last year, there were just 3.

That represents an increase in burglaries of 600 percent.

Crimes in the grand larceny auto category have also surged by 47 percent, with 25 committed this year, compared to 17 through mid-April in 2012.

The trend has gotten the attention of a fair numer of city media outlets, and the 112 Precinct has already held one emergency meeting on the matter.

One resident told the local NBC affiliate that it seems a different house is being broken into every day.
