112 Precinct Halloween Safety Tips

Keep your kids safe on the spookiest of holidays with tips from the NYPD.

Halloween is one holiday that children look forward to and parents often dread. With thousands of children walking the streets, knocking on doors and wearing costumes, the potential for accidents and unsafe activity is there.

But thanks to the 112th Precinct, Patch has a few safety tips to share with Forest Hills children and parents who plan to trick-or-treat this year, to make sure Halloween is fun and safe for everybody.

These safety tips, designed for kids planning to trick-or-treat, have been approved by 112 Precinct Commander Christopher Tamola, and Precinct Council President Heidi Harrison Chain:

3. Do not enter a stranger's home or car for the promise of candy.

4. Do not eat unwrapped candy or treats.

5. If you go out after dark, wear light colored clothing or carry a flashlight.

6. Go trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, don't wander too far from home.

7.  Walk on the sidewalks — don't walk in the streets.

For parents, always be sure to inspect candy before children indulge, and don't let children you're accompanying wander to far away. Children often choose similar costumes and can be confused in low light wearing clothing that looks alike.

Be sure to have a safe and fun Halloween, and send your favorite costume photos to matthewh@patch.com!
