Family Talk: Gay Pride Means More This Year

A momentous week in the fight for gay rights ends, very appropriately, with a celebration of gay pride.

Just days after the Supreme Court deemed DOMA unconstitutional, members and allies of the LGBT community rejoice not only in taking pride in being part of the community itself, but in the fact that a major stride in the fight for gay rights has been made as well.

The decision to overturn Defense of Marriage Act means the federal government will now recognize marriages of same-sex couples in states where the act is legal, granting legally married same-sex couples federal benefits they were previously denied.

Seeing a change for equal rights for any specified group of peoples is a win for everyone – women, men, people of varied races and ethnicities, our children and, ultimately, our country as a whole.

I cannot help but to feel a sense of relief that the Constitution is moving further towards equality for everyone.

Whatever your personal beliefs, laws should be put into place to protect people and not hinder them or their rights.

Families in the United States today are made up of a number of different kinds of compositions and alienating one kind of family or marriage is utterly unacceptable.

My only hope is that progress for peoples’ rights – gay, straight, etc. – continue with a propensity for real justice as future generations lead this country. Anything less would be unfathomable.
