Meng to Host Health Fair

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, D-Flushing, will host a fair on Aug. 17 to promote healthy lifestyles for adults and children in her district.

The Healthy Families Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the cafeteria of Elmhurst’s Newtown High School, located at 48-01 90th St. The event will include numerous health services and medical screenings as well as informational booths and presentations from borough healthcare providers, hospitals, government agencies and non-profits.

“With diseases and obesity rates continuing to climb, it is critical that we encourage the public to live healthy lifestyles,” the congresswoman said. “Making sure kids and adults exercise, eat right and take important preventive measures are vital to maintaining good health.”

All services provided at the fair are free of charge and no health insurance or appointments are necessary.

Participants include the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, American Cleaning Institute, American Red Cross, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center of Flushing, Elmhurst Hospital, EmblemHealth, Food and Drug Administration, Healthfirst, Hispanic Federation, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Korean American Family Service Center of Flushing, Make the Road New York, New York Hospital Queens, the city’s Department of Transportation, Parker Jewish Institute, South Asian Council for Social Services, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture, Voices for Healthy Kids and the YMCA.

Health screenings at the event will include vision and hearing for children, diabetes and blood pressure for adults, Hepatitis B and bone density.

The fair will offer activities for children, such as exercise classes, arts and crafts and coloring sheets.

Representatives from various agencies will be able to provide information in Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Punjabi, Bengali and Hindi.
