Here Come the Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Governor announces plans for Charge NY, which will eventually create a network of 3,000 charging stations.

Gentlemen, start your engines. Specifically the electric ones.

New York State will get more than 360 new electric vehicle charging stations in a push to reduce fossil fuel use, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Charge NY, which was unveiled by the governor in his State of the State address earlier this year, will create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charge stations over a period of five years. Additionally, the initiative aims to put 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period of time.

“Building this network of innovative charging stations will encourage New Yorkers to use fuel-efficient alternatives like electric vehicles as well as grow the green industry and jobs in the state,” Cuomo said.

The New York Power Authority has issued a request for proposals for the installation of 100 electric vehicle-charging stations that will be located at transportation hubs and parking lots, primarily within New York City’s metropolitan area. The stations are expected to be in operation by 2014.
