Stavisky Directs Queens Women To Breast Cancer Health Services

State Senator urges women to fight the disease with early detection.

State Sen. Toby Stavisky is urging Queens women to get mammograms during National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and is directing them to Adelphi University to help them do it.

Through the university’s innovative program, local women can get free or low-cost mammograms with just a phone call.

““I commend Adelphi University’s School of Social Work for assisting women in obtaining free or low cost mammograms,” Stavisky said.  “Although most mammograms are normal, early detection is key.”

The program, which has been in existence since 1980, helps women with everything from emotional support to scheduling mammograms, through a hotline that anyone in New York State can call at 1-800-877-8077. New Yorkers can also reach the service via the web at http://www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer/

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to get mammograms,” said Hillary Rutter, director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.  “I hope that this month women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram.  Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal.”
