Soccer Stadium Location 'Unimaginative:' Report

A report in Capital New York quotes a group of urban planners criticizing the choice to take up 13 acres of parkland.

A report published in Capital New York on Thursday indicated that — at least to some experts — the proposed site of a soccer stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is less than creative.

The stadium proposal, which has caused a stir being sited on 13 acres of current parkland, is unpopular with many parks advocates who say its environental impacts alone deserve more study.

Now, a report in Capital New York says that some urban planners in the city are criticizing stadium planners for showing a lack of imagination.

One such planner said that during studies for a possible Olympics bid, the city found more than 300 vacant sites large enough for stadiums.

By putting the stadium on existing parkland in Queens' largest park, they say, they're ignoring the possibilities of developing areas that currently don't serve any purpose.
