Oct 28: Democracy In Action

There's a lot you can do to get involved with just days to go before the mid-term elections.

The weather isn't the only thing that's been heating up lately. With local political campaigns in full swing, now is the best time to educate yourself about your local elected officials.

You can help the city's election practices, help the local economy by starting a business, or just take a little time to learn a few key facts about the candidates as the head to the polls on Tuesday. Here's 5 things you need to know today:

1.     Keep up with the last week of the campaign with our election coverage. Yesterday, we took a closer look at the candidates in Assembly District 28.

2.     Speaking of keeping up with the elections, the Juniper Park Civic Association in Middle Village will be hosting its candidates night tonight at 7:45 p.m. Make sure to check in if you want to get to know your local representative.

3.     There's more ways than just voting to work to help your democracy. The city council is looking for polling volunteers to take surveys on new voting machines. Be sure to volunteer your time if you're so inclined.

4.     Looking to help maintain your neighborhood? Stop by the Queens Preservation Council meeting at Borough Hall at 6 p.m.

5.     Or, if you're more inclined to help your community by starting a new business, head over to the financial literacy class at the Forest Hills Library
