New Web Site Celebrates Bike Month in NYC

To kick off the city’s 9th annual Bike Month, Transportation Alternatives has launched BikeNYC.org, which features an events calendar, bike-related deals and tips for riders.

“In 1990, New York City celebrated the first-ever Bike Day. Before long, Bike Day evolved into Bike Week and then, Bike Month. Now, with the launch of BikeNYC.org, we recognize that bicycling is a year-round fact of life for New York City,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives.

Bike Month in a yearly event that offers rides, workshops, races and events – all of which can now be found on BikeNYC.org.

Besides biking events and cycling-related deals, the web site will also feature periodic live question-and-answer sessions, hosted by New York bicycling experts. These sessions will cover everything from fixing a flat to bike share tips.

Also part of Bike Month is National Bike To Work Day, on May 18, which bills itself as an opportunity for casual bicyclists to try bike commuting and discover the benefits of bicycling for transportation. Transportation Alternatives will be hosting bike commuter rest stops at every East River bridge, the Staten Island Ferry and the Upper West Side.

According to Transportation Alternatives, the first bike path in America opened in Brooklyn in 1894, and today over 200,000 people are bicycling around New York City. Half a million New Yorkers bicycle at least a few times a month, and that number will rise with the launch of NYC Bike Share. With 10,000 bicycles distributed at 600 stations, it is planned to be the largest bicycle sharing system in the Western Hemisphere.
