How to Beat the 'Holiday Blahs'

Remember, you deserve a present just like everyone else

‘Tis the season to treat YOURSELF!

With all the pressures of holiday shopping and high expectations from friends and family, the holidays can sometimes take a toll. Yes, it is a season of “giving,” however the giver is usually the one who is left feeling the holiday blahs.

This is when you must check yourself and put YOU first! I do not mean this in a selfish way, but you have to feed your body, mind, and spirit before doing for others.

For instance, if your mind is bombarded with an infinite “to-do” list, set aside at least ten to twenty minutes a day to meditate. Relax and allow yourself to sit quietly without interruptions. If you cannot be still, hit the treadmill or go for a brisk walk.

Exercise is proven to be a great stress reliever and it helps to clear the mind. One of my personal favorite things to do is write—get it all out! Grab a journal and express your thoughts. It’s your journal, so you can write whatever you wish.

If that’s not enough, run a hot bath and add your favorite bath salts. There’s nothing like soaking in a hot tub of water. This coupled with scented candles or oils for aromatherapy is sure to calm your nerves, and it is especially helpful before visiting those annoying relatives.

And do not hesitate to treat yourself to something extra special; book an hour-long massage or a day at the spa.

I love music, however holiday music has its limits. Create a playlist of your favorite tunes to keep your spirit lifted. Music soothes the soul and alters your mood, so why not play something that makes you happy?

And at all costs, stay away from “Debbie Downer.”  Avoid conversations that dampen your spirit. Keep them light and always focus on the positive aspects. You will be amazed at how the dynamics will shift once you reflect on what is good.

Remember, there is nothing wrong with a little selfishness. You deserve a present just like everyone else. Just make sure this holiday season you give yourself the gift of peace of mind.
