Furor Over Weiner's Twitter Feed Reaches Boiling Point

Lewd photo that appeared on Twitter subject of intense media scrutiny.

A social media firestorm has descended on Forest Hills, all the result of a lewd photograph that appeared — briefly — in the Twitter feed of U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner.

The internet has been abuzz with everything from conspiracy theories to sympathizers calling foul play.

In an interview with MSNBC and Politico on Wednesday afternoon, Weiner said that he “can’t say with certitude” that the photo was not him, though he denied tweeting it.

The photo, a salacious shot of a man’s occupied brief underwear — appeared on Weiner’s Twitter account in the form of a message to another user.

Immediately in the wake of the photo’s appearance — and rapid disappearance — Weiner tweeted, as an explanation, that his feed had been hacked.

Since the incident, blogs and websites have hounded the Congressman, demanding an explanation.

So far, beyond calling the incident “a distraction,” Weiner’s office has been relatively quiet on the issue. His press secretary, Dave Arnold, did not respond to a request from Patch for comment.

The media circus that the incident has spawned has spread far and wide, with one Twitter user even starting a feed for the much-debated photo's subject. (Warning: link includes  lewd photo in question)

For his part, the Congressman has not entirely avoided the media spotlight since the incident. He has been visible both in Washington, D.C. and in his district,
