Frugal Family: Go Generic Edition

Find Out What Household Staples You Can Always Save on By Going Generic

If you have ever stood in the supermarket or drugstore looking to save money, but just couldn’t bring yourself to buy the generic brand for fear that the quality would not be the same, then this article is for you.

According to TLC, while there are many items you shouldn’t scrimp on, the following frequently used and expensive household items are not only completely safe to buy in a generic version but essentially contain the EXACT same ingredients as their more expensive name brand friends.

Keeping in mind, that many of the generics you find are produced by the same manufacturers as the name brand product -- just with a different label.

So before you purchase the following, do a label to label comparison of ingredients.  Your receipt will thank you for it.

  • Milk
  • Baby Formula
  • Bottled Water
  • Aluminum foil
  • Antacids
  • Pain Relievers
  • Basic laundry detergent and bleach
  • Seasonings, herbs and spices
  • Baking items like flour, sugar, cornstarch and baking soda

Also, when at the doctor or pharmacy, always ask about the availability of the generic version of your prescription for big savings. You will find the large majority of major medications have a generic version with the exact same active ingredients.
