JASA AWARDED $7.4 MILLION IN SUPERSTORM SANDY RELIEF FUNDS FROM GOVERNOR CUOMO AND NEW YORK STATE

JASA (www.jasa.org), a leading non-profit agency serving older adults in the New York metropolitan area, was awarded a Superstorm Sandy Social Services Block Grant in the amount of $7.4 million to support the organization’s ongoing recovery and future resiliency efforts.

“JASA is extremely grateful for this much-needed support from Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State,” said Kathryn Haslanger, CEO of JASA. “The award helps to highlight the importance of JASA’s services, which provide a safety net for one of the State’s most vulnerable populations. Funding from this grant will be the foundation for the large-scale work JASA is undertaking to ensure the safety and security of New York’s seniors in the face of future emergencies.”

As a trusted social service provider to the senior population in the shoreline areas of Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, JASA was called upon to provide support and relief to thousands of its frail senior tenants and clients as well as other community residents who were stranded and without vital resources during the days following Superstorm Sandy. Working with a wide range of City, State, and Federal agencies, relief organizations and hundreds of volunteers, JASA provided food, water, blankets, medical care, and reassurance to seniors waiting for power and services to return.

This grant will cover unreimbursed expenses resulting from the storm including repair and renovation, as well as rebuilding and resiliency measures to withstand future extreme weather emergencies.  This support to JASA's infrastructure will allow them to rebuild from the devastation caused by Sandy and concentrate on obtaining critical funding to address the growing needs of the aging population in the New York metropolitan area.
