Gillibrand Joins Meng to Advocate Women-Owned Businesses

Legislators talk up small-business tax breaks in Queens.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand joined Assemblywoman Grace Meng in Flushing on Tuesday to advocate for women-owned businesses across the borough.

Meng and Gillibrand were advocating for the SUCCESS Act, a piece of federal legislation designed to help small business start-ups with tax breaks and deductions.

“I’ve heard from women in Queens and all across the state. I know women are ready to lead us to a thriving and stable economy, with new good-paying jobs that can support a family," Gillibrand said. "When we provide the tools that small business leaders need, we can help this economic engine take off.”

Both legislators had gathered at Great Bear Auto Repair, an auto body shop owned by Audra Fordin.

Fordin said an extension of tax breaks aimed at small businesses would help her continue to turn a profit in a tough economy.

Assemblywoman Meng said Fordin's story was similar to thousands across Queens and New York State.

“We're already seeing more start-ups, more hiring, and more entrepreneurs striking out on their own," Meng said. "Nowhere is the growth of women-owned businesses more evident than here in New York State, New York City, and in Queens."
