Custom Design Wedding Cake Shop to Debut Store in Forest Hills

Manhattan's Silk Cakes will open its second store on Metropolitan Avenue next month.

A Manhattan-based customized wedding and specialty cake store with Asian-inspired designs and ingredients is planning to open a shop in Forest Hills in November.

Silk Cakes, which launched its first store on Ludlow Street in 2006, will debut its second store on Metropolitan Avenue in several weeks.

Amy Lai, whose sister, Judy, founded the company, said that renovations at the site, located at 98-14 Metropolitan Ave., would be completed by Nov. 11 and that the store would likely open a week later.

“We don’t have a set date yet, but we’re hoping to do it in the third week of November,” she said.

The store will be located across the street from McDonald’s and about a block-and-a-half from Trader Joe’s.

Silk Cake’s Manhattan branch is by appointment only, but the Forest Hills store will be open to the public and include items for sale on-site.

“There will be more services in our Queens store,” Lai said. “It will be open to the public and have a retail boutique filled with our most popular flavor combinations. People can come in and try our cakes.”

She said the store would likely feature Silk Cake’s top five most popular flavor combinations, but that the site would also offer seasonal flavors.

“We’ll have five core products and other flavors that come and go,” she said.

The store custom makes wedding cakes with ingredients and designs that are Asian inspired, such as green tea.

Lai said Silk Cakes decided to debut its second branch in Forest Hills because she has lived in the community for five years.

“I love the neighborhood and thought that this was something that was missing,” she said.

The shop will sell wedding and specialty cakes as well as premium high quality coffee brands.
