Austin’s Steak & Ale House has been a special place to enjoy top-notch gastronomic cuisine and libation in a cozy pub setting since its founding in 1991.
The Kew Gardens establishment lives up to the first part of its name with delicious and varied hamburger options, tangy chicken wings, huge steaks and countless seafood, chicken, soup and salad options. And as to the latter half of its moniker, Austin’s has one of the largest beer selections in the borough with about 20 beers on tap and 60 bottled selections.
Then there are the specials, which certainly emphasize the steak and ale motifs. On Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., any airline employee can enjoy two-for-one drinks at the bar. After a bit of sleep, all patrons can wake up to Sunday morning brunch specials from noon to 4 p.m. that begin at $15.95.
Sundays also feature “Football Spectacular” with 25-cent chicken wings, $3.50 pints of beer and a free house shot every time the Giants or the Jets score a touchdown.
The bargains continue during the week with happy hour, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., when all drinks have reduced prices. Consider the following: $3.50 cosmos; $3.50 apple martinis; $3 domestic draught beers; and $3.50 imported draughts.
Besides that, the bargains are on a day-to-day plan. A Monday option is the 16-ounce fresh roasted prime rib for $19.95. Meanwhile over at the bar, ladies can consume well drinks and domestic draughts for free from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Tuesday brings a 1.5-pound lobster with a glass of wine or a pint of beer for $21.95 for diners. Anybody who can present a law school or college ID can enjoy two-for-one drinks from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 25-cent chicken wings (with a two-drink minimum) from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
On Wednesdays, any purchase of an entrée reduces the price of an accompanying bottle of wine by 50 percent. An entrée purchase also means a two-for-one deal on appetizers, if ordered after 7 p.m. And at the bar, Wednesday’s “Blue Collar” promotion offers unlimited well drinks and bottles of beer for $20 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
A 16-ounce grilled New York strip steak with a free pint of domestic draught for $21.95 is the Thursday bargain. Again on this night, ladies can imbibe well drinks and domestic draughts for free from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., when a three-hour karaoke extravaganza kicks off.
During weekday lunch, the burgers are one of the mainstays at $6.50. Add 45 cents for cheese or onion, or add $1.45 for bacon and cheese, onions and mushrooms, bleu cheese, mozzarella with marinara sauce, bacon, Swiss cheese and barbecue sauce or chicken wing sauce with bleu cheese.
Other favorites are the Railroad Special ($8.95), roast beef, American cheese and sautéed onions on garlic bread, and the Austin’s Chicken Sandwich ($7.95), grilled chicken breast with teriyaki sauce, melted Swiss cheese and bacon on a toasted club roll.
Try the Sheppard’s Pie or the Chicken Pot Pie for $9.95. The Steak Tidbits, Basket of Fried Shrimp and the Fish & Chips go for $10.95.
Of course, there appetizers such as Mozzarella Sticks ($5.50), a Soup Du Jour ($3.50 for a cup, $4.50 for a bowl), Caesar Salad ($8.95 for two) and other salads, and pasta dishes such as Linguine with Homemade Clam Sauce ($10.95).
