Austin Street Shoppers Share Ideas for Vacant Storefronts

Forest Hills residents said they would like to see new restaurants, hardware store at empty sites.

Austin Street has its share of vacant storefronts. There are five empty sites between Ascan Avenue and 71st Road alone.

But Forest Hills residents said they had some ideas on how to fill the available storefronts.

"Everything is pretty much right here on Austin Street, but there's no hardware store," resident Keith Olds. "The closest one is a half-mile away on Metropolitan Avenue."

Other residents said they wanted more varied cuisine on the commercial strip.

"I'm Korean - so, of course, I'd want a Korean restaurant or a Japanese one," said Kay Han, who works at Austin Street's Cheese of the World.

And another resident who only identified herself as Gail said she would like for there to be more inexpensive dining options in the community.

"We could use another diner because they're cheaper," she said. "Restaurants here are expensive, so you can't go that often."
