Mumford & Sons to Play Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in August

Concert will be one of 19 planned for the site during the next three years.

The Forest Hills Tennis Stadium is scheduled to host a performance by Mumford & Sons in late August that would be the first of as many as 19 shows during the next three years, the New York Times reported.

The structure, which debuted in 1923, once provided space for John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, which was referenced last year on “Mad Men,” to play.

But, for years, the stadium was the focal point of battles in the community with preservationists arguing it should be maintained and others, including club members, calling for the site to be turned into condos.

Roland Meier, who is the president of stadium owner West Side Tennis Club, told the Times that the structure is in good enough shape to host one concert this summer.

Mumford & Sons is scheduled to play Aug. 28. Additionally, the site will host six concerts per season for the next three summers.

Meier told the Times that this summer’s concert will serve as a pilot to convince residents of neighboring Forest Hills Gardens that the performances will not be a nuisance.
