Flushing Town Hall to Host Jazz, Lunar New Year and Korean Mask Class in February

Other upcoming classes include poetry readings, calligraphy and folk painting.

Flushing Town Hall’s February roster of programs includes everything from Korean mask making and Lunar New Year dance demonstrations to jazz performances.

The center, located at 137-35 Northern Blvd., will hold its Korean mask-making workshop at 1 p.m. on Feb. 2.

Participants will be given an introduction to Korean traditional crafts before coloring and decorating a Bong San T’al Ch’um mask. All materials are included.

Gamin- Wind and Stone will be held at 8 p.m. on Feb. 7. Gamin is a celebrated piri, taepyeongso Korean oboe) and saengwhang player. The event will include traditional and contemporary Korean music, including the world premiere of New York-based composer Yoon-Ji Lee.

On Feb. 8 through March 30, the town hall will display The New Vision: Korean Folk Painting, which will include examples of Minhwa, which is a symbol of good fortune for the new year.

The exhibit will showcase the work of 60 artists from the Baraem Art Research Institute. The opening reception will bed held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 8.

A workshop titled Make Your Wish on Hanji will be held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 9.

During this class, attendees will be able to write a wish for the new year on hanji, which is a traditional Korean mulberry paper.

On Feb. 14, the center will hold La Voz de Tres at 8 p.m. The program will include a performance by Chilean vocalist Natalia Bernal, keyboardist Mike Eckroth and seven-string guitarist Jason Ennis.

The trio will blend songwriting traditions of Latin American with picks from the Great American Songbook.

The town hall’s Lunar New Year Sampler will kick off at 1 p.m. on Feb. 16.

The event, which is curated by Hsing-Lih Chou, will include dance demonstrations from China, Korea, Taiwan and India.

On Feb. 16, the center will offer a workshop titled Calligraphy on Silk, during which attendees will be able to write their new year’s wishes on Chinese silk fans. The program begins at 3 p.m.

Vocalist Barbara Rosene will perform tunes from the Jazz Age and speakeasy clubs of the 1920s at 8 p.m. on Feb. 21.

Live from the POEMobile will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 23. This event will include performances by Korean poets, musicians and dancers. English translations of the poems will be projected onto Flushing Town Hall’s garden wall.

And 13 Moons, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28, will feature GrayHawk Perkins, a New Orleans-born Native American from the Choctaw and Houma tribes, who will perform blues, folk, jazz, tribal rhythms and blend the music with storytelling.
