Flushing Town Hall to Celebrate 35th Anniversary with January Jazz Shows

Cultural center will host six jazz and classical performances in the new year.

Flushing Town Hall will kick off its 35th anniversary celebration in January with six jazz and classical music performances.

The town hall, located at 137-35 Northern Blvd., will offer its monthly jazz clinic from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 8.

The free event is aimed at high school students and adults as well as those who are interested in learning more about jazz.

A jazz jam will take place at 7 p.m. that same day. The event, which costs $10, will allow attendees to play jazz along with their peers or just listen. The jam will be led by Queens Jazz OverGround.

On Jan. 10, the town hall will host Music Mix with the David Hazeltine Trio at 8 p.m. Hazeltine will play piano, while Louis Hayes will be on the drums and Peter Washington will play bass.

The show costs $15 general admission or $10 for members and students.

The town hall will host a classical music performance, Trio Cavatina: Five Boroughs Music Festival, at 3 p.m. on Jan. 12.

The concert, which costs $25 general admission and $20 for members and students, will feature performances of Beethoven and Brahms by the Trio Cavatina, who won the 2009 Naumburg International Chamber Music Competition.

The Alex Blake Quartet will play the town hall at 8 p.m. on Jan. 24. Blake is a bass virtuoso who is recognized for his technical and stylistic mastery of the classical upright bass and electric bass.

The show costs $15 general admission and $10 for members and students.

And the town hall’s Lunar New Year jazz show with the Young Joo Song Quartet will perform at 3 p.m. on Jan. 31.

The show, which costs $15 general admission and $10 for members and students, will feature music by one of Korea’s leading jazz pianists.

Song has recorded eight albums with EMI, Warner and Sony as well as won Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz Performance at the Korea Music Awards.
