Want to Borrow a Bike in Forest Hills?

DOT looks for input on bike share stations, could Station Square be a good spot?

The New York City Department of Transportation is looking for a few good places to park their bikes. Could Forest Hills make the cut?

The DOT recently introduced an interactive map, asking for suggestions from NYC residents on where they’d like to see bike share stations.

Starting this summer, the DOT will introduce the bike share stations at locations throughout the five boroughs, allowing residents to borrow bikes for short, 30-45 minute trips.

Membership in the city’s bike share program will cost less than a monthly MetroCard, according to the DOT, and there will be roughly 10,000 bikes in circulation at 600 stations around the city at any one time.

The big question now? Where to put those 600 stations. The DOT has created a crowd-sourcing map, asking residents for their input.

In Forest Hills, dozens of residents have made it clear that Continental Avenue between the and Queens Boulevard would be an ideal spot.

The only sticking point for Forest Hills would be the lack of bike lanes.

While some Queens neighborhoods like Sunnyside and Astoria have more than one bike lane option, Forest Hills currently has almost no designated bike lane space.

District Manager Frank Gulluscio said he couldn’t comment on whether the idea would be popular with local residents, because it hasn’t been brought before the board in a long time.
