Tennis Stadium May Not Be Sold After All: Report

Club member tells paper that West Side Tennis Club may hang on to aging historic structure.

There may yet be some hope for the West Side Tennis Stadium, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

The saga of the tennis stadium has been a long one, from its heyday as a concert and championship tennis venue to its ignominious decline into disrepair.

Now, according to a club member, the stadium may not be included in a parcel of land to be sold as a revenue-generating measure for the club.

Jack Lielbler, chairman of the club’s stadium committee, told the Daily News the club is “not in a desperate situation,” and doesn’t feel pressure to get rid of the aging structure.

“"The intent here is to let the developer be as creative as possible and accept something that hopefully makes financial sense to the club," Lielber said.

Last year, the stadium was put up for sale by the , and almost sold to developer Cord Meyer,

Cord Meyer had planned to convert the iconic structure into luxury housing.

According to the paper, the club has set an Oct. 31 deadline for proposals regarding more than 2 acres of the club’s land.

. The report in the Daily News said that the intense wind and snowstorms of the last 12 months have damaged the stadium further.

Both club members who want to see the stadium sold, and restorationists who want to see the location landmarked have until that date to push for their personal agendas.
