Tennis Stadium Could Hosts Concerts This Year: Report

Queens Ledger says tennis stadium could host an event by August.

Concerts are coming back to the West Side Tennis Stadium, according to the Queens Ledger.

A report published on the site this week quoted West Side Tennis Club personnel saying that the century-old structure is in better shape than was previously believed, and could host a concert as early as this summer.

The stadium has been the focal point of some pitched battles in the community over the past few years, with preservationists arguing it should be maintained, and others — including club members — arguing it should be turned into condos.

Now, it's beginning to look like the preservationists will get their way — at least in the short term.

The paper quoted club President Roland Meier as saying the club could host one event this summer and as many as three next summer. He also told the Ledger that the club's board has already talked to concert promoters.

Concerts were once common in the stadium, with historic groups like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones playing there.

The Rolling Stones concert was referenced on an episode of Mad Men last year.
