'Sexist' Statue Getting Facelift: Report

Triumph of Civic Virtue near Borough Hall has been fenced off, for now.

A controversial Queens statue that can't seem to catch a break may finally be getting its due. Or at least a good scrub. 

The Triumph of Civic Virtue, a statue which has drawn both admiration from Queens historians and scorn from Queens legislators, is getting a buff and polish, among other things, according to the New York Daily News. 

The statue has made quite a few headlines in recent years, It depicts a naked man standing astride two female figures in a kind of victory pose.

Defenders of the statue said

Now the statue, which has fallen into a state of disrepair, is being restored at a city site. A fence has been erected around the base to keep residents from wandering into the base pit.  

Dan Andrews, spokesman for Borough President Helen Marshall, told the paper that the statue is being restored because of a crack that was recently discovered. There is currently no timeline for its return to its resting place in a park at Queens Boulevard and Union Turnpike.
