Reader Comment of the Week

This week's comment involves a DOT plan to remove parking spaces from Metropolitan Avenue and 71st Avenue.

The best reader comment of the week came from a story on Community Board 6 hearing a city Department of Transportation proposal to remove 14 parking spaces at Metropolitan Avenue and 71st Avenue as a method of preventing accidents.

Reader Linda Fisher wrote: "As a resident near Metropolitan and 71st, I would like more info about the proposal. If the bus stop is moved further west, does that mean the stop in front of the library will be eliminated? That will mean a longer, more difficult walk for the elderly and disabled.

Is CB6 concerned about the traffic nightmare further down Metro? Will DOT eliminate the parking spaces there that cause enormous congestion at all hours of the day? The poorly timed lights? The dangerous pedestrian access (or lack thereof) to Trader Joe's? Why on earth would Metro and 71st take precedence over that?

And once the new Petco opens, pedestrians will have no safe place to walk. We are not Nassau, we are not Florida. People in Queens actually walk."
