Queens Zoo Opens Registration for Fall Children's Programs

The zoo is offering a mini-camp, internship and various classes for youths this fall and winter.

The Queens Zoo has opened registration for its fall and winter education programs for children, which include a mini camp, internship and other classes.

The zoo, located at 53-51 111th St. in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, is currently signing up children for its 2013-2014 classes for kids.

The zoo’s family overnight adventure, which is aimed at ages 5 years and above, will allow participants to stay overnight at the zoo, take part in late-night walks in the Aviary and meet zoo animals close up.

The event will run from 5 p.m. on Sept. 28 and end at 10 a.m. on Sept. 29. The fee is $85 for members and $100 for nonmembers.

Grand Adventures in the Zoo, which is aimed at ages 4 years and up, will enable grandparents and their grandchildren to take part in an afternoon of fun activities, such as live animal encounters, at the zoo’s Discovery Center.

The program kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 as well as Oct. 2, 9 and 16. The fee is $15 per session for members and $20 for nonmembers.

Little Hatchlings will be held on Wednesdays from September through November at 10 a.m. or 11:30 a.m.

Attendees will explore the zoo with their children, sing songs, take part in arts and crafts and visit animal exhibits.

The program, which costs $250 for members and $270 for nonmembers for 10 classes, is aimed at children ages 10 to 23 months with an adult.

The zoo’s Toddler Time, which is for ages 2 to 3 years with an adult, will give children the opportunity to meet a variety of zoo animals and take part in interactive classes.

It will be held at 10 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from September to November.

The 10-class series will cost $250 for members and $270 for nonmembers.

Kinder Kritters, which is for children ages 4 and 5 years, is an interactive class with hands-on activities, animal encounters and visits to exhibits.

It begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays from September through November and February to March. Members pay $150, while nonmembers get in for $170.

The zoo’s mini camp, which is for ages 5 to 9 years, will teach youngsters to discover the natural world around them and include animal presentations.

Winter session is Dec. 26 and 27, mid-winter session is Feb. 19 and 20 and spring session is April 15 and 16.

Each mini-camp runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee for members is $125 and $150 for nonmembers.

And the teens zoo internship, which is for ages 13 to 17 years, will give participants in-depth zoo experience by allowing them to meet vet technicians, conducting animal behavior studies and learning about zoo keeping.

The internship costs $450 for members and $500 for nonmembers.
