Meadow Lake Gets $1.27 Million in Upgrades

Upgraded bike and walking paths, rain gardens make their debut.

Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park has taken a few more steps down recovery road.

The area, which in recent years has been the subject of consternation on the part of Queens conservationists, has been the focus of several improvement projects in recent years. Last week, city parks officials announced the completion of yet another rehab for the lake.

The Parks Department used $1.27 million to improve a walking and bicycle path that had been crumbling for years, and the planting of a rain garden that will work to filter stormwater as it falls into the lake.

“With the City’s population growing, our infrastructure aging, and our environment becoming more unpredictable, it is no longer enough to design attractive parks. We must also design parks that are accessible to a wider variety of park visitors and friendlier for the environment,” said outgoing Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.

In addition to the announced improvements, Meadow Lake has also received a new dock and a renovated boathouse in the last two years.
