Former Hospital Will Now Be Grocery: Report

St. John's to be converted into retail space later this year, the Queens Chronicle says.

After trying unsuccessfully to pitch the former St. John’s Hospital in Elmhurst as a healthcare facility, developers are now trying to turn it into a grocery store and retail spot, the Queens Chronicle reported Thursday.

St. John’s Hospital closed in 2008,

While there had been hope that the building itself could be used as a smaller-scale medical facility and treatment center, those plans have been abandoned, the paper said.

Community Board 4 Chairman Anthony Moreno told the Chronicle that the inside of the former hospital has been completely gutted, and that the renovation of the site is well underway.

Moreno also said that the top floors of the building would likely be converted to apartments, with the middle floors used as retail space above a two-floor supermarket.
