Forest Hills Nonprofit to Take Part in Mock Election on Nov. 5

Forest Hills’ Queens Community House is hosting a mock election in on Nov. 5 in a section of Queens where more than 50 percent of residents are not eligible to vote, a spokesman for the nonprofit said.

The “mock” election will take place at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights on Election Day.

Dennis Redmond, chief strategy officer for the Queens Community House, said more than half of the residents in Jackson Heights are currently not entitled to vote.

The event, which is organized by the New York Coalition to Expand Voting Rights, is aimed to support legislation from Councilman Danny Dromm, D-Jackson Heights, that would grant voting right to legal residents in city municipal elections.

“We are encouraging all non-citizen residents of the district to come out that day to cast a vote for mayor, borough president and City Council member,” a statement from The Community House read. “Your vote may not ‘count’ this time, but your desire to participate as a New Yorker with other New Yorkers will be seen and heard.”

Redmond said many Queens residents who are in the United States legally and pay taxes are unable to vote because they do not yet have citizen status.

Queens Community House, which is based in Forest Hills, is a nonprofit agency with 21 sites that serve as centers for community gathering, organizing and social service activity.
