Central Queens Y Unveils Slate of Fall Programs

Forest Hills center's upcoming programs include dancing for children, basketball leagues and gymnastics.

Forest Hills’ Central Queens Y has released its extensive schedule of fall programs, which includes everything from swimming classes and basketball clinics to a discussion on a book on Hurricane Sandy.

The Y, located at 67-09 108th St., will offer a variety of children’s dance and movement programs in the fall, including Toe Tappin’ Toddlers, which begins Oct. 4 and is aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 36 months.

Mommy and Me (ages 18-36 months) will run on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Nearly Nursery (ages 30-42) months begins Sept. 16 and is held every Monday, Thursday and Friday at 9 a.m.

Little Dancers (ages 20-36 months) is held on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m., while Totally Tots (ages 24-36 months), which aims to help children transition to nursery school is every Monday and Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Smorgasbord of Fun, which includes story, songs, crafts and cooking projects, begins at 9 a.m. every Wednesday.

The Y will hold a play gym open house on Sept. 11 for children, ages 6-18 months, at 10 a.m. and another – for ages 19-36 months – at 11 a.m.

Tiny Tumblers, a balance and coordination class, will start at 11:20 a.m. on Mondays, while Gym Explorers (12-24 months) will kick off at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesdays.

On Thursdays, the Y will offer gymnastics class for children, ages 3 ½ to 5, at 4:15 p.m. Ball Bonanza (ages 3-5), which teaches kids to use balls from various sports, will start at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Triple Play, which combines baseball, basketball and soccer, begins every Tuesday at 3:45 p.m., while Movement Mania starts at 12:15 p.m. that day.

Gymnastics and Dance runs from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays for grades K-4 and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. for grades 2-6.

Some other children’s classes include Funtastic Gymnastics (Thursdays at 5 p.m. for grades 1-6), Super Sports (Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. for K-2 and 5:15 p.m. for grades 3-6), Capoeira (Sunday at 2 p.m. for grades K-6), Intermediate Guitar (Tuesdays at 4:45 p.m. for grades K-6) and Clay Workshop (Thursdays at 4:15 p.m. for grades K-6).

Basketball leagues this fall include Jr. NBA, which will have Sunday games at 4 p.m. and practice on Tuesdays with an evaluation clinic on Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m., as well as Boys All Star Teen League, which has practice and games at 6:30 p.m., and Hoop It Up Instructional League, which has evaluations and clinics on Sept. 22 and 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27, Nov. 3, 10 and 17 and Dec. 8.

Indoor Jr. Soccer will have sessions at noon on Sundays beginning Sept. 29.

Swimming classes include Pamper Paddlers, Little Fishes, Swim Time and Aquaflame Competitive Swimming, which will include a tryout on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.

The fall’s adult classes include Tai Chi, Balanced Body Pilates, Dance Power Movement, Personal Training and Yoga in Motion.

There will be a Hebrew Ulpan class on Oct. 2 at 9:15 a.m. and an Israeli and International Folk Dance program on Sept. 11 at 1:15 p.m. A drama workshop will begin at 1 p.m. on Sept. 12.

The Y will also lead trips to the Queens Botanical Garden, Aaron Copland School of Music and Juilliard concerts.

Special events during the next few months include The Curious Life of David, King of Isarel (Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m.), At the Other Movies: Beyond “Citizen Kane” (Oct. 1 at 12:20 p.m.), Phyllis Chesler: An American Bride in Kabul (Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m.) and a discussion of Sheri Fink’s book on Hurricane Sandy (Oct. 21 at 1:30 p.m.).
