Central Queens Y to Hold Discussion on Yiddish Culture in Europe

YIVO Institute for Jewish Research will give a presentation at the Y on Jan. 23.

The Central Queens Y will host a trip to Yivo Institute for Jewish Research this month for a presentation on books written in Yiddish.

YIVO, which preserves rare books, diaries and other Yiddish resources, will discuss some of the earliest Yiddish books published, early Soviet children’s books illustrated by early 20th century Russian artists and a Yiddish publication from the Vilna Ghetto.

The presentation will highlight the culture and life of Yiddish speaking Jews in Europe through their books and newspapers.

The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 23, will end with a lunch at a Chelsea restaurant.

It costs $5 or $10 for those who need a ride in a van provided by the Y. The cost of lunch is not included.
