The competition began on Sunday, with aspiring losers will having access to coached cardio sessions, group fitness classes, a nutritionist-led supermarket workshop and support from a social worker. They're also free to use the Y's pool and fitness centers to help them in their weight-loss mission.
Dale Stark, CQY's director of health and fitness, also plans to set up a blog, so participants can write about their experiences online.
Based lightly on the NBC television program "The Biggest Loser," Stark explained that she will hold weekly weigh-ins and give all the advice and encouragement she can. With a reasonable regime of proper eating and exercise, an individual can healthily lose about two pounds a week, said Stark, who calculated that the winner will probably lose around 20 pounds.
"There will be fierce competition," Stark said. "It's going to be a lot of fun."
