Some Organic Competition On Austin Street
Greenline Market opens its doors to compete in Forest Hills.
Thanks to last Sunday's breast cancer walk, Austin Street's new Greenline Organic grocery store opened last week to lines of curious new customers.
"We had just opened on Saturday, no one knew we even existed yet," said manager Milena Jovanovic.
From Greenline Organic's small but open storefront, with woven straw lining the awning, you can see Natural Fruit & Vegetable down the street, its larger presumed rival. Natural is even larger than its next-door neighbor, C-Town, but stacked with organic products.
The stores are competing to serve an identical clientele, with identical products, but Greenline's new customers say the prices are better on their side of the street.
Jovanovic said all their fresh produce was organic, and they received certificates from their suppliers saying so. And while there are a few non-organic-labeled products in the store — Boar's Head cold cuts and cheese, for example — the neatly packed and displayed groceries have the organic seal of approval without the huge price bump.
Greenline Organic is not a one-stop-shop for a week of groceries for the entire family. With baskets only, many customers were scoping out the prices of particular products and comparing them to other stores in the area.
"Some of the prices are definitely lower," a woman said, pointing to a $2.97 bottle of salad dressing that she claimed cost $3.79 at Natural.
Jovanic seemed pleasantly surprised at the amount of business they were getting on just their fourth day open. She explained the draw to Greenline Organic was the prices and the aesthetic.
"It looks nice here, we decorated it well," she said. With vines drooping from the ceiling and neat fruit displays with burlap sacks tucked in small barrels, the careful layout looks more like a high-end local grocery you'd find in Manhattan or Park Slope.
When asked for comment, the manager of Natural, Mike Park, had little to say. He said business seemed unchanged since Greenline opened, and wished them the best of luck on Austin Street.
Park said he has walked by Greenline, but has yet to step inside to check out the prices.
The staff at Greenline showed a brand-new-businness energy, and liked how the first month of business was going. Jovanic said if business kept looking this good, they would consider expanding in the future.

I passed by and could not resist taking a few pics of our new organic store-Greenline on Austin Street. I browsed and found a nice selection of organic, fresh foods and purchased a handful of things. The trend is to get people to purchase and consume healthy and fresh foods. I invite everyone to stop in and take advantage of the nice selection.
