Rally To Save After-School Programs Today

Borough Hall event will feature local leaders, child care professionals.

Queensboro Hall, at 120-55 Queens Blvd. will be the site of a rally to save the city's after-school programs today at 3:30 p.m.

Borough officials are encouraging all parents and community members to attend to make their voices heard.

"Child care and after school programs provide children with critical educational opportunities that pave the way for future success," said Borough President Helen Marshall.

In a recent letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, local leaders, including state Sen. Toby Stavisky, Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi and City Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, told the mayor that there was no reason to cut the programs, thanks to an infusion of cash from the state.

"It is my hope that the administration will do what is right for this city’s youth and use a portion of the additional $292 million in education funding to fund the Beacons targeted for closure," Hevesi said.
