Democrats Choose David Weprin To Run For Weiner's Seat: Report

According to published reports at New York 1 and the New York Times, Assemblyman David Weprin has been chosen by the Queens County Democrats to run for the Ninth Congressional District seat this September.

The seat, f is a district that curves its way around several middle class and well-to-do neighborhoods predominantly in Queens, but also Brooklyn.

Weprin, who has spent more than a decade in city and state government, currently serves in the Assembly after two terms in the city council. After mounting an unsuccessful run for New York City Comptroller in a crowded field, Weprin won a special election for his current Assembly seat in February 2010.

Weprin’s pedigree is unmatched in service to Queens, with father Saul a hugely influential former Assembly member and Speaker of the Assembly and brother Mark a current councilman and former Assemblyman in eastern Queens.

Weprin has a reputation for being a financially prudent steward of government. He got his start in politics in 1983 when, at the age of 27, he was selected as the Deputy Superintendent of Banks for New York State.

A representative of the Queens County Democrats said that the group is not able to confirm the selection yet, but will send out the information as soon as it is available.

The special election will be held on Sept. 13, primary day in New York State. So far, Queens County Republicans have not made a selection in the race, though there has been a great deal of speculation around Weiner's 2010 opponent,
